Leading Through Uncertainty: When There’s No Manual
A few years ago, after the social unrest in Chile and in the midst of the pandemic, we at Almabrands began talking about something we called, at the time, “Everything Changes,” not as a slogan, but as a hypothesis: what we were living through was not a one-off crisis, nor a string of isolated events (social, political, health, economic crises), but the beginning of a different way of inhabiting the world.
A way marked by instability and uncertainty.
Time has confirmed that intuition. It was not one crisis followed by another. It was—and is—a permanent state of change, where certainties become scarce and closure unlikely.
Today, rising oil prices are just one more example. They are not the problem in themselves, but a sign of an environment with no stability, where we don’t know how long it will last, where it is heading, or what comes next. And while we try to make sense of that—and of the war, and other wars—we are living through a new layer: artificial intelligence, which not only transforms industries but also strains something deeper—our human capacity and need to envision the future.
And it is not only change that overwhelms us, but also how fast it happens. A pace that, at times, feels inhuman. We barely grasp one change before we are facing the next. There is no time to process, to integrate, to make sense of what is happening. Anxiety, confusion, fear, paralysis, inaction, and resistance to change set in.
In that context, leadership becomes critical. But not just any leadership. For a long time, we associated leading with having answers, projecting certainty, knowing where to go, delegating, and supervising. Today, that expectation becomes fragile, because often there simply are no clear answers.
Leadership today calls for additional, new, and different capabilities: adapting, containing, sustaining. Experimenting more than defining, questioning more than assuming, staying open without losing direction, and actively participating in processes instead of delegating entirely.
It is about leading in an environment where certainty is not a given, and where a leader’s value lies in how they navigate ambiguity rather than in how much they know in advance.
